My Favourites for The Book Mine Set

1. Favourite Canadian author?
Margaret Atwood
of course -- but I am also very fond of Camilla Gibb, Ann Marie Macdonald, David Adams Richards, Joseph Boyden and Alan Cumyn, an Ottawa writer.

2. Favourite Canadian novel?
This is an almost impossible question...as Atwood will be mentioned ad nauseum, I will mention one by David Adams Richards, The Lost Highway.

3. Favourite Canadian nonfiction?
Your Call is Important to Us--The Truth about Bullshit -Laura Penny

4. Favourite Canadian picture book?
None - although I do enjoy the Canadian Geographic Magazine.

5. Favourite Canadian YA or juvenile chapter book?

Up to Low by Brian Doyle - (Our cabin is near Low, Quebec.) His writing is filled with humour and wit. I also enjoyed The Secret Life of Owen Skye by Alan Cumyn as it too is funny and insightful.

6. Favourite Canadian science fiction or fantasy book?
I am not big on sci-fi or fantaxy but I suppose if you include Atwood in this category, I would have to say that I loved Oryx and Crake --- I know -- so predictible.

7. Favourite Canadian romantic fiction?
The Robber Bride - Atwood -- Canadian "romance" at its finest--I just love the women and their barbs.

8. Favourite Canadian mystery?
Ottawa has a group of mystery writers (The Lady's Killing Circle) who are very active. I love to read books by Mary Jane Maffini and laughed my way through Too Hot to Handle. I also enjoyed reading R. J. Harlick's The River Runs Orange.

9. Favourite Canadian graphic novel?
Although I have read many graphic novels, I haven't read any Canadian graphic novels. I really enjoyed Maus (Spiegleman) and Palestien (Sacco).

10. Favourite Canadian book blog?
The Book Mine Set
I also use Librarything and the Canadian Bookworm Group.

11. Favourite Canadian fictional character?
Although he does not appear in novels, I absolutely love Benton Frazer from Due South....polite, smart, and sexy -- what more can you ask?

12. Favourite movie based on a Canadian novel or story?
Having just mentioned Paul Gross, my thoughts turn automatically to Men with Brooms and Passendale but I think I must confess that Bon Cop, Bad Cop just has to be my favourite!

13. Favourite Canadian short story?
"Bluffing" by Gail Helgason - I think that this story speaks to anyone who has loved and lost.

14. Favourite Canadian poet?
Margaret Atwood -- ok - at least I am consistent....

15. Favourite Canadian poem?
"Bring Back Mom - An Invocation" (who else? Atwood...).

16. Favourite Canadian play?
Les Belles Soeurs (Michel Tremblay) and Balconville (David Fennario)

17. Favourite novel by an established Canadian author?
In an attempt to interject another author's name into my favourites list -- Ann Marie Macdonald's The Way the Crow Flies.

18. Favourite novel by an up-and-coming Canadian author?

Three Day Road - Joseph Boyden.

19. Favourite Canadian book award?

The Giller Prize.

20. Favourite Canadian publisher?
None.

21. Favourite Canadian humorous book?
Generally speaking, "Canadian humourous book" seems to me to be an oxymoron as most CanLit is dreadfully depressing. Nonetheless, I absolutely laughed until I cried while reading Come, Thou Tortoise by Jessica Grant.

22. Favourite Canadian newspaper?
I tend to read the Citizen as it has local news.

23. Favourite Canadian magazine or journal?
None

24. Favourite Canadian dystopian novel?
The Handmaid's Tale (Atwood).

25. Favourite Canadian epistolary novel?

None.
